Origins

The earliest documented existence for the Order of the Secret Monitor, or of Brotherly Love, is found in Scotland around 1790, but it may have existed earlier in Ireland. The degree was certainly known in the United States by the 1820s. Sometime near the close of the nineteenth century, probably around 1875, Dr Issachar Zacharie carried the Order to England, following the end of the American Civil War.

Under his leadership, a Grand Council of the Order was formed on 15 July 1887 under the banner of Alfred Meadows Conclave No. 1, at a meeting held at the Hotel Victoria, London.

Principles

The Order of the Secret Monitor is deeply rooted in the biblical story of David and Jonathan, emphasising strong friendship, mutual trust, and watchful brotherly care among its members.

The focus that is placed on friendship makes the OSM one of the fastest growing orders in Freemasonry and is widely considered to be one of the most caring of all Masonic orders. There is a vibrant and wide spread community of Secret Monitor Conclaves in Staffordshire & Shropshire – with meeting times and venues to suit all needs!
