A Brotherhood of Friendship & Support

The Order of the Secret Monitor, also referred to as the Brotherhood of David and Jonathan, is one of the most rapidly expanding Masonic orders in the United Kingdom.

Open to all Master Masons, this Order emphasises key principles such as self-sacrifice, mutual trust, and attentive brotherly care. Known as the "friendly degree," the OSM highlights the essential Masonic virtues of brotherly love, relief, and truth.

About us

The biblical roots of the Order date back to approximately 1000 BCE in the land of Canaan, but its modern Masonic history began in Scotland around 1790. The degree was later developed in the United States, where in 1868, Robert Morris famously performed the first ceremony in King Solomon’s quarries in Jerusalem.

The Order was brought to England in 1875 by Dr. Issachar Zacharie, a surgeon who had served in the American Civil War. Under his leadership, the Grand Council of the Order was formally established in London on July 15, 1887.

A few things we’re great at

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Ut feugiat aliquet convallis. Morbi cursus scelerisque est, a sodales mi fringilla sit amet.

Pastoral Care

The OSM is uniquely distinguished by its four Visiting Deacons, a role that exists in no other Masonic order. Their specific duty is to maintain regular contact with every member of the Conclave providing “watchful brotherly care” and “effective friendly advice“. This system effectively turns the Conclave into a proactive support network, earning it the reputation of being the “friendly degree

Accessibility

Unlike many other progressive orders, the only prerequisite for joining is to be a Master Mason in good standing. The OSM also has a lower financial and physical burden regarding regalia. Members do not wear aprons; instead, they wear simple sashes and breast jewels (or collarettes for officers). This makes the Order more accessible to younger or newer masons and more practical for those who travel to meetings.

Impactful Charity

The OSM excels at maximizing the impact of its charitable giving through a matched funding model, effectively doubling the original donation. This has led to significant contributions to local and national causes, such as providing laptops for at-risk students through “Building Self Belief” and supporting the Mark Benevolent Fund in purchasing blood bikes and cars for community use across the country.
